MBNA America 400 - Dover International Speedway
Newman Sweeps at Dover Downs
Ryan Newman won the MBNA America 400 on Sunday afternoon for his series-leading seventh victory of the season. Newman won both events at Dover International Speedway in 2003, becoming the second driver in as many weeks to pull off a sweep and the ninth driver to sweep at Dover. Newman had to overcome a flat tire in the early goings, benefited from NASCAR’s new caution rule to get back on the lead lap, and stretched his fuel over the final 106 laps to take the win. Newman won by 1.152 seconds over Jeremy Mayfield to take the checkered flag for the eighth time in his career. Newman led 106 of the event’s 400 laps, while Kevin Harvick led the most on the day, staying at the front of the field for 133 laps. Mayfield’s second-place finish equaled his top effort of the season. Tony Stewart crossed the stripe in third, followed by Harvick and Jeff Gordon in the top five. Points leader Matt Kenseth finished ninth and extended his point lead to 436 points over Harvick, who moved into second.
Dover Qualifying Canceled Due to Hurricane Isabel
Projected weather conditions in Dover, Delaware has forced NASCAR to cancel qualifying for the Winston Cup and Busch Series events at Dover International Speedway. The path of Hurricane Isabel is expected to include the Dover Bay area. The starting lineups for the weekend’s events will be set in accordance to the NASCAR rule book, giving Matt Kenseth and Kevin Harvick the pole positions. Kenseth, the Winston Cup points leader, will start the MBNA America 400 from the top spot, while Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start second. Harvick will start the Stacker 200 Busch race from the pole, thanks to the 21 team’s lead atop the owner points.
