GFS Marketplace 400 - Michigan International Speedway
Newman Wins in the Irish Hills
Ryan Newman captured his series-leading fifth win of the season on Sunday, stretching his fuel to win the GFS Marketplace 400 at Michigan International Speedway. Newman was able to make his final tank of gas last the final 52 laps and post a 1.652-second victory over Kevin Harvick. Jimmie Johnson led the most laps on the day, pacing the field for 50 of the event’s 200 laps, while Newman was out front three times for 32 laps. For Newman, the victory is the sixth of his Winston Cup career. Harvick came home in the second position; his sixth top-five finish in the last eight races. Tony Stewart crossed the finish line in third, while rookie Greg Biffle finished fourth and Steve Park garnered his best finish of the season, ending the day in the fifth position.
Labonte Sweeps Michigan Pole Positions
There seems to be a lot of brooms out lately. Last week, Robby Gordon swept the circuit’s road course events, and this weekend, Bobby Labonte swept the pole positions at Michigan International Speedway. Labonte turned in a lap of 37.847 seconds, at an average speed of 190.240 mph, around the 2-mile track to win his second consecutive Michigan pole and the fourth of his career at MIS. Ryan Newman will start in a familiar spot, the front row. Newman, who has five poles in 2003, captured the outside-pole position. Last week’s winner Robby Gordon will start from the third position while Kevin Lepage, making only his third start of the season, qualified in the fourth spot.
